Austin Kleon’s 2014 book, Show Your Work provides an interesting model for social scientists. In this delightful, short book, Kleon argues that rather than hide your strategies for success in your given field you should share your creative insights. For me, as an anthropologist and historian, this means sharing information about my research before it’s formally published and summarizing some of my insights from two decades of studying historic cemeteries, enslaved communities, and overlooked Virginians. As part of this effort I created a monthly newsletter to share my on-going research and projects. It’s free, richly illustrated, and will always contain a “how to” list at the end. In the first issue I provide tips on “How to Find an Abandoned Graveyard.” Sign-up for my newsletter, The Virginia Gazette, here.
